Digital Art I Acrylic | Watercolor paper | Photographs 14 X 14 inches, The Muse collection is the result of a vision quest and inspired by a painting of my favorite Dutch painter and Eos, the Greek goddess. The collection started with an invitation to create a work of art for the World Muse conference in Bend, Oregon. World Muse is a social change movement inspired by women and girls. The theme was 'Muse'. The painting that always inspired me as a young artist was 'Rosy fingered dawn at Louse Point', 1963, an abstract expressionist painting by Dutch painter Willem DeKooning. While researching the meaning of the title I found a reference to the Greek goddess Eos, the goddess of the dawn. I quickly became immersed in the myths surrounding Eos and these became the starting point for this Muse collection. The art work I submitted for the Muse exhibit is titled ‘Rise with Love’. It is about the moment we wake our sleeping selves with love and compassion. It’s this inner awareness that is necessary before we can externalize it. The myth of Eos is particularly interesting to me as the bringer of life and light. Winged Eos rose into the sky from the river Oceanus at dawn riding her span of horses. She had powerful siblings, Helios, the sun and Selena, the moon and is among Titan gods. Eos was cursed by the jealous Aphrodite and this resulted in her perpetually falling in love. The many lovers she had were whisked away to foreign lands. Among them were Orion, Phaethon and Tithonus, the Trojan Prince who became her official consort and for whom she petitioned Zeus to grant him immortality but forgot to also request eternal youth. A tragic ending to their love story. The woman as a powerful goddess with superhuman powers speaks to me deeply. In a time where history is being rewritten we need more than ever empowering images of women wielding their innate powers, taking our rightful place on the world stage as equals. |
